It binds to bacterial 16S ribosomal RNA and inhibits protein synthesis, leading to cell death by inhibiting the production of proteins vital for cell division. 2ABPC has been shown to be effective against gram-positive pathogens such as Streptococcus pneumoniae and Staphylococcus aureus. This drug also has antibacterial activity against gram negative pathogens such as Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Proteus vulgaris, Enterobacter cloacae, Citrobacter freundii, Salmonella typhi, and Shigella dysenteriae.
