It inhibits bacterial growth by acting as a competitive inhibitor of the enzyme dihydrofolate reductase, which is essential for the synthesis of tetrahydrofolate. 6-Benzyl-2-(methylthio)pyrimidin-4(3H)-one has been shown to be effective against Mycobacterium tuberculosis in vitro.
