    2-Aminoethyl 2-aminoethanethiosulfonate dihydrochloride (2-AE2) is a homologous compound that inhibits the acetylcholine receptor, which is a protein embedded in the cell membrane. This inhibition leads to an increase in the extracellular concentration of acetylcholine and a decrease in the membrane potential. It has been shown to be irreversible and noncompetitive. The α subunit of the acetylcholine receptor is required for binding by 2-AE2. Acetylcholine receptors are expressed on Xenopus oocytes and have been shown to have no activity with 2-AE2 when they are not expressed.
