Magnesium sulfate heptahydrate is a white crystalline solid that appears in the form of flakes or granules. It is the magnesium salt of sulfuric acid, with a chemical formula MgSO4.7H2O. Magnesium sulfate heptahydrate has a thermal expansion coefficient of about 2.6 x 10-5 K-1 and water vapor absorption coefficients of about 0.008 cm3/g at 25 °C and relative humidity of 100%. It is soluble in alkanoic acids and reacts with proteases to form products that are hydrolyzed to amino acids. Magnesium sulfate heptahydrate is commonly used as an additive for irrigation water in commercial farming operations to provide nutrients for plants, such as magnesium and sulfur, which are typically deficient in soil. In addition, it can be used as a buffer solution in laboratory experiments involving protease activity.
