The p-Xylylene dithiocyanate (PDTC) is a potent inhibitor of the enzyme activity of glutathione reductase, an important cellular antioxidant. The PDTC inhibits the growth of cancer cells in vitro and in vivo. The efficacy of PDTC is not limited to a particular type or stage of cancer and it has been shown to inhibit tumor formation in animals. PDTC also has a dietary component and can be found as selenium compounds in food. Selenium compounds are analogs of PDTC and have been shown to inhibit tumor growth in animal studies. Selenium compounds may have anticarcinogenic properties due to their ability to inhibit cell growth, which could lead to reduced carcinoma cell lines.
