It has been shown to be useful in the development of new analytical methods, such as chromatographic and kinetic data. Uroporphyrin I octamethyl ester is converted to uroporphyrin I hexamethyl ester by carboxylation with methanesulfonic acid, which increases the solubility and stability of this product. This reaction can be modulated by adding an oxidizing agent, such as hydrogen peroxide or potassium ferricyanide.
