It can be synthesised by the reaction of an aldehyde with tert-butyldimethylsilyl chloride and imine. The product can be hydrolyzed to give propargylamine or converted to esters using fatty acid chlorides. (tert-Butyldimethylsilyloxy) acetaldehyde is also used as an acceptor for piperazine, which can be used to form hydrochloride salts of amines and amides.
