This reaction is catalyzed by hydroiodic acid, which converts the ester group on the methyl 3-bromo-2-nitrobenzoate to a hydroxyl group. The methyl 3-bromo-2-nitrobenzoate can be used for the synthesis of 2-(3′,4′,5′,6′)-trichloromethylthioacetophenone and 1,1′-(1,4,5,6,-tetrachlorobenzene)bis(4-methylbenzenesulfonyl)dipiperidine dihydrochloride.
