It inhibits DNA synthesis by inhibiting the enzyme DNA polymerase, which is essential for the replication of viral and cellular DNA. N4-Benzoyl-2'-deoxy-5'-O-tritylcytidine also has anticancer activity, which may be due to its ability to inhibit ribonucleotide reductase and thereby block the production of RNA.
