1-(Thiophen-2-yl)piperazine is an oxazolidinone that is used to treat leishmaniasis. It inhibits the growth of Leishmania protozoa by binding to the ATP synthase enzyme and preventing the formation of ATP, which is required for energy production in cells. 1-(Thiophen-2-yl)piperazine has a broad antibacterial profile and can be used to treat infections caused by bacteria resistant to other antibiotics. The blood pressure lowering effects of 1-(Thiophen-2-yl)piperazine are due to its inhibition of angiotensin II. Pharmacokinetic studies have shown that this drug has a terminal half life of 9 hours in humans.
