It is used in the synthesis of glycol ethers and as a reagent in organic synthesis. BFE has been shown to inhibit the activity of dpp-iv, an enzyme that regulates T-cell apoptosis. BFE also inhibits the mcl-1 protein, which is involved in mitochondrial function and programmed cell death. This inhibition leads to inhibition of proliferation and activation of apoptosis in cancer cells. Studies have shown that BFE can be used to treat bowel disease by inhibiting bacterial overgrowth in the large intestine.
