Diethyl disulfide (DEDS) is a chemical that has been used to investigate the role of disulfide bonds in infectious diseases. DEDS binds to protein thiols and forms stable covalent linkages with them, which alters the function of proteins. DEDS has been shown to be effective against autoimmune diseases by preventing the formation of reactive oxygen species.
