1-[(2-Propynyloxy)methyl]pyrene is a fluorescent compound that emits blue light. It can be synthesized by nitration of 1,2-diphenylethane with nitric acid and ammonium chloride. The azide moiety in the molecule has stacking interactions with the propyne group and the methyl group. This stacking increases the fluorescence emission intensity and crosslinking of the microspheres. The substituents on the pyrene ring determine their emission colors; for example, if a nitro group is substituted for a hydrogen atom, then it will emit green light.
