    1-[(2-Propynyloxy)methyl]pyrene is a fluorescent compound that emits blue light. It can be synthesized by nitration of 1,2-diphenylethane with nitric acid and ammonium chloride. The azide moiety in the molecule has stacking interactions with the propyne group and the methyl group. This stacking increases the fluorescence emission intensity and crosslinking of the microspheres. The substituents on the pyrene ring determine their emission colors; for example, if a nitro group is substituted for a hydrogen atom, then it will emit green light. The molecular constants are determined by quantum mechanics, which includes calculations of molecular orbitals and electron spin states. 1-[(2-Propynyloxy)methyl]pyrene is used in chemistry as a fluorescent probe to study proteins and other biomolecules because it has high selectivity for amines over thiols or carbonyls.
