6-Heptenoic acid is a natural product that has been found to have antiviral activity against hepatitis C virus. 6-Heptenoic acid binds to the macrocyclic inhibitors on the virus, which prevents it from binding to receptor sites on the host cell. This leads to inhibition of viral replication, and thus a decrease in viral load in the body. The antiviral potency of 6-heptenoic acid may be due to its ability to bind to proteinases such as serine protease, which are necessary for viral replication.
