Cetyltrimethylammonium chloride is a quaternary ammonium compound that is used as a disinfectant and preservative. It is effective against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, including antibiotic-resistant strains. Cetyltrimethylammonium chloride has been shown to inhibit the growth of bacteria by disrupting the bacterial membrane potential, leading to leakage of intracellular components. This compound also inhibits mitochondrial function in bacteria and has been shown to be effective against benzalkonium chloride-resistant bacteria. It has been shown to be effective against Gram-positive bacteria, including methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and vancomycin-resistant Enterococci (VRE). Cetyltrimethylammonium chloride disrupts the membrane potential of mitochondria in bacteria, leading to cell lysis. The effectiveness of cetyltrimethylammonium chloride has been tested by surface methodology and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy on human serum samples. This study found that cetyltrimethylammonium chloride was more effective than benzalkonium chloride, a chemical commonly used as a preservative in cosmetics.
