(R)-Trichostatic acid is a natural product that has been shown to have biological activities, including anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial effects. It is a hydroxamate compound that can be found in fungi such as Trichoderma viride. Trichostatin A (TSA) is the best-known enantiomer of trichostatic acid. The biological activity of TSA is due to its ability to inhibit protein synthesis by binding to the eukaryotic ribosome, preventing the attachment of amino acids onto the ribosome. When TSA binds to the ribolome, it inhibits translation of mRNA into proteins. TSA also has anti-inflammatory properties and can inhibit cell growth in leukemia cells and fibroblast cells at effective concentrations.
