Reversible inhibitor of cholinesterases

Donepezil HCl is a reversible inhibitor of acetylcholinesterase (AChE), a type of cholinesterase enzyme. Donepezil HCl temporarily binds to and blocks the active site of the enzyme, inhibiting the enzyme's ability to break down acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter involved in learning and memory. This increase in acetylcholine concentrations at cholinergic synapses helps improve cognitive function in patients with Alzheimer's disease.
