Erbium oxide (ErO) is a phosphor that has been shown to have antibacterial activity against bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. ErO has been shown to kill bacteria by releasing mn2+ ions, which are toxic for cells. The antibacterial effect of ErO is related to its ability to emit light in the near-infrared region of the spectrum, which is absorbed by the sulfide groups on the surface of bacterial cells. ErO also has optical properties that can be tuned by changing the size and shape of its particles.
