SCH79797 prevents neuronal death by inhibiting the activation of the neuronal apoptosis signal pathways and blocking signals from cytosolic calcium. This drug also inhibits the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines, including tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and interleukin-1β (IL-1β), by blocking toll-like receptor signaling pathways. SCH79797 has been shown to be effective in models of Parkinson's disease and other neurological disorders and is an antagonist at basic protein sites.
