CAS:Sulfadimethoxine is a sulfonamide antibiotic that inhibits the synthesis of folic acid in bacteria. It binds to bacterial dihydropteroate synthase and blocks the incorporation of p-aminobenzoic acid in folate. Sulfadimethoxine has been shown to be effective against infectious diseases, such as bacterial meningitis, but not against viral infections. Sulfadimethoxine has also been used as a broad-spectrum agent for the treatment of protozoal infections, such as malaria and amoebiasis. The drug is available in combination preparations with other antibiotics and as a veterinary medicine for dogs and cats. In vitro methods are used to test sulfadimethoxine efficacy, including chromatographic analysis, microbiological assays, and analytical methods. Colloidal gold may be used to detect sulfadimethoxine by binding to the drug's coordination geometry.
