1-Methyl-2-nitro-6-phenylimidazo[4,5-B]pyridine (1MP) is a cytotoxic agent that inhibits the growth of mammalian cells in vitro. It has been shown to inhibit the production of acid complex and prostatic hypertrophy in animals. 1MP is a mutagen that can induce carcinogenesis in animal models. 1MP inhibits the synthesis of proteins by binding to amine groups on the ribosome and preventing peptide bond formation between amino acids. The 1MP induced DNA damage has been shown to be repaired through recombination with undamaged DNA strands, which may lead to genetic instability and cancer. 1MP also inhibits the growth of typhimurium bacteria by inhibiting protein synthesis, which may be due to its ability to inhibit synchronous fluorescence in these bacteria.
