It is used in the synthesis of methyl sulfones, which are used as molecular probes to study the structure and function of proteins. 3,5-Bis(trifluoromethyl)benzenethiol has been shown to have antimicrobial properties against P. aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus. This compound also inhibits melanin production in Drosophilia melanogaster. This chemical has been shown to be surface active with modifiers such as chalcones and dyes.
