Propargyl-PEG4-Br is an analog of the triazolyl system, which is a novel class of antibacterial agents. It has been shown to have good activity against gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria. Propargyl-PEG4-Br binds to the bacterial cell wall by covalently binding to the amino groups of the lipid II layer that are present in the outer membrane. This leads to disruption of bacterial cell wall synthesis and cell death. The structural modifications on propargyl-PEG4-Br make it more specific for gram-negative bacteria, while glycol modifications make it more specific for gram-positive bacteria.
