CAS:Copper(I) oxide is a compound that has antibacterial properties. It is synthesized by reacting copper(II) sulfate with hydrogen peroxide in the presence of a diazo compound. Copper(I) oxide is used as an antibacterial agent because it can kill bacteria by reacting with chloride ions to produce chlorine gas, which damages the cell membrane. The photocatalytic activity of copper(I) oxide can also be used for water disinfection and deodorization. Copper(I) oxide has been shown to be effective against staphylococcus and other bacteria, although it is not active against acid-fast bacteria such as Mycobacterium tuberculosis or Mycobacterium avium complex.
