CAS:1-(2-Chloroethyl)-2-methyl-5-nitro-1H-imidazole is an organic solvent that is used as a reagent in mass spectrometry. It has been shown to be a potent inhibitor of nitroimidazole, which is an enzyme that plays an important role in the synthesis of DNA and RNA. 1-(2-Chloroethyl)-2-methyl-5-nitro-1H-imidazole has been used in vivo to treat leishmaniasis caused by Leishmania species. The drug binds to the sulphonate group on the parasite's dihedral, inhibiting nucleophilic reactions and leading to cell death.
