CAS:Dimethyl 2-ketoglutaconate (DMG) is an intermediate in the Krebs cycle and is a precursor for the production of glutamate, which is an important neurotransmitter. DMG has been shown to induce autophagy, a process by which cells clear out damaged proteins, organelles, and other cellular components. This process may be important in the treatment of various cancers such as cervical cancer or solid tumours. DMG has also been shown to inhibit hif-1α, a transcription factor that regulates many genes including those involved in tumor growth and metabolism. The effect of DMG on carcinoma cells can be enhanced with benzodiazepine binding. A study found that DMG was able to inhibit tumor growth in prostate cancer cells through metabolic changes that were not observed in normal cells.
