It is a potent agonist of adenosine receptors and has been shown to inhibit the release of neurotransmitters such as serotonin, acetylcholine, and endogenous adenosine. 8-(3-Oxocyclopentyl)-1,3-dipropyl-7H-purine-2,6-dione also blocks coagulation by inhibiting platelets from binding with each other. This drug also has been shown to be a potent vasoconstrictive agent that can lead to congestive heart failure.
