3-(3-Pyridinyl)-1-(4-pyridinyl)-2-propen-1-one is a molecule that can be activated by oxidation. It has been shown to have antineoplastic properties in vitro and to inhibit the growth of bladder cancer cells. The mechanism for this inhibition is not yet fully understood, but it may be due to reactive oxygen species production or enzyme inhibition. 3-(3-Pyridinyl)-1-(4-pyridinyl)-2-propen-1-one has been shown to inhibit autophagy and mitochondrial membrane potential in human cell lines, suggesting that it may also have an effect on apoptosis.
