It binds to the active site of the enzyme and prevents it from removing acetyl groups from lysine residues on histones, thereby blocking transcriptional regulation. The drug has been shown to inhibit the growth of some bacteria, such as Mycobacterium tuberculosis and Mycobacterium avium complex, as well as a host of other eukaryotic cells such as yeast.
