The key steps are a diastereoselective hydrogenation of the cyclopentane ring system and an efficient alkylation reaction of the resulting alcohol with 9H-fluoren-9-ol. 2-[Cyclopentyl[(9H-fluoren-9-ylmethoxy)carbonyl]amino]acetic acid has been shown to be a potent inhibitor against bacterial growth.
