CAS 13573-08-5: Germanium iodide (GeI2)

Germanium(II) iodide is a ligand that is activated by Lewis acids and can be used to synthesize germanium compounds. It has been shown to participate in allylation, enolate formation, and enolization reactions with aldehydes. This ligand has been shown to have a particle size of less than 10 nm with an octahedral geometry and coordination chemistry that is dependent on the nature of the metal ion. It has also been observed that these particles can be used as an absorber for infrared light in organic solvents.

Germanium(II) iodide acts as a reagent that forms stable ionic adducts with carbenes. It is also used in the preparation of allylgermanes by reacting with allylstannanes. Further, it reacts with allyl bromide in the presence of zinc iodide to get allylgermanium(IV), which on reacts with carbonyl compounds to give the corresponding homoallylic alcohols.
