JNJ-46778212 is a potent and selective small molecule antagonist of the GABA-A receptor. It was designed to inhibit synaptic transmission in the brain by blocking the postsynaptic response to neurotransmitter binding. JNJ-46778212 has been shown to have no effect on nicotinic acetylcholine receptors or glutamate receptors. It also does not block calcium channels or sodium channels, which are responsible for other types of neuronal signaling pathways. The compound has been shown to have efficacy in animal models of epilepsy and showed promise in reducing symptoms of schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and major depressive disorder in human subjects. JNJ-46778212 is currently undergoing clinical trials for these indications.
