RP 70676 is a potent inhibitor of the hepatic enzyme 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl coenzyme A reductase. It is used to treat hypercholesterolemia and atherosclerosis, as well as other conditions. RP 70676 has been shown to inhibit the synthesis of cholesterol in the liver by binding to cytochrome P450 enzymes and inhibiting the conversion of acetoacetate to acetyl-coA. This agent also inhibits cholesterol ester production in macrophages and lowers plasma levels of cholesterol by inhibiting its synthesis.
