The reaction products of 5-methylthiophene-2-carboxaldehyde are thrombin inhibitors, which inhibit the process of blood clotting by preventing the conversion of fibrinogen to fibrin. 5-Methylthiophene-2-carboxaldehyde also reacts with bases to form salts, such as potassium phosphate, which can be used for biological studies.
