2-(Methyl)thiophenol (2-MT) is an organometallic compound that has antimicrobial activity. It reacts with proton to form a molecule, which then reacts with trifluoroacetic acid and forms a particle. 2-MT is used in the synthesis of β-unsaturated ketones by ring-opening reactions. The molecule can also be detected by surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy, where it adsorbs onto the surface of a material such as gold or silver and generates vibrational energy.
