Barium iodide anhydrous (BaI) is a white powder that is insoluble in water and has exothermic properties. It is used as a high-temperature thermochemical oxidizer, which undergoes an exothermic reaction when mixed with ammonium, yttrium, or copper. The reaction product can be immobilized onto various materials, such as copper and silicon nitride. BaI has been used to create textured surfaces for improved heat transfer and as a component of radiation-resistant coatings for spacecraft components. BaI also has the ability to generate diffraction patterns from crystals, making it an ideal substance for use in X-ray crystallography.
