Zinc fluoride, tetrahydrate is a difluoride of zinc with the formula ZnF2. It is a colorless solid that crystallizes in octahedral shapes. This compound has magnetic and optical properties. The coordination number for the tetrahydrate is four and the absorption spectrum is at about 208 nm. Zinc fluoride, tetrahydrate has been shown to absorb ultraviolet light and emit visible light. It also absorbs infrared light, which may be due to its coordination number of four. Furthermore, zinc fluoride, tetrahydrate can be used as a cation in coordination complexes with ligands such as chloride anions or sulfate anions.
