(2,5-Dioxopyrrolidin-1-yl) octanoate is a carbonic anhydrase inhibitor that has been shown to have cytotoxic effects on tumor cells. (2,5-Dioxopyrrolidin-1-yl) octanoate is used as a fluorescent probe for the detection of amide groups in tissue samples and has been shown to be effective in the treatment of cancer. The compound inhibits the methionine aminopeptidase, which is involved in the activation of prodrugs and peptides. This inhibition prevents peptide degradation and leads to cell death by increasing cellular accumulation of prodrugs and peptides. The conjugates formed by (2,5-dioxopyrrolidin-1-yl) octanoate may also be used for glucose monitoring.
