CAS:1,1'-[Ethane-1,2-diylbis(oxy)]bis(4-nitrobenzene) is an ether with a nitro group. It is used in the production of glycols and as a solvent for dyes and other organic compounds. This compound is also used in catalytic reactions, such as hydration of ethylene oxide to produce ethylene glycol. It is an intermediate in the synthesis of 1,2-ethanediol from sodium nitrite and formaldehyde. The hydrolysis of 1,1'-[ethane-1,2-diylbis(oxy)]bis(4-nitrobenzene) yields 4-(hydroxymethyl)phenol and 2-(nitrosomethyl)tetrahydrofuran.
