It has been shown to be a potent catalyst for the hydrogenation of aldehydes and ketones. Dichlorodicarbonylbis(triphenylphosphine)ruthenium(II) stabilizes carbonyl compounds by reducing them to form alcohols or carboxylic acids. This compound can also be used in x-ray crystallography, as it can be readily crystallized with high purity.
