CAS 1476-11-5: cis-1,4-Dichloro-2-butene

Cis-1,4-Dichloro-2-butene is an organic compound with the formula ClCH=CHCl. It is a colorless liquid that has a sweet odor and boils at 78°C. Cis-1,4-Dichloro-2-butene is used in the synthesis of acrylonitrile. It undergoes ring opening to give vinyl chloride and 1,4 dichlorobutane. The cis configuration has lower activation energies than the trans configuration so it is more stable thermodynamically. This results in a higher conversion rate of cis-1,4-dichloro-2-butene to vinyl chloride. The cis configuration also has higher solubility in hydrochloric acid than the trans configuration. Cis and trans areomers can be distinguished by molecular modeling techniques such as NMR spectroscopy or XRD diffraction patterns.
