Pilocarpine nitrate

Pilocarpine nitrate is a cholinergic alkaloid, which is a natural product extracted from the leaves of the Pilocarpus plant, primarily Pilocarpus jaborandi. It functions as a muscarinic receptor agonist, primarily targeting the M3 receptors. This action stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system, leading to an increase in glandular secretions, including saliva and sweat, and contractions of the smooth muscles, particularly in the eye. The primary application of Pilocarpine nitrate is in the management of glaucoma, where it reduces intraocular pressure by facilitating the drainage of aqueous humor through the trabecular meshwork. It is also used in the treatment of xerostomia (dry mouth), particularly in patients undergoing radiation therapy for head and neck cancer, as well as in those with Sjögren's syndrome. By promoting salivary secretion, it significantly alleviates the discomfort associated with dry mouth.
