This compound is the first intermediate in the biosynthesis of imidazoleglycerol, which is an analog of lysine residues. N-Formyl-L-histidine has been shown to be a potent inhibitor of pancreatic lipase and phosphatases, which are enzymes that hydrolyze triglycerides and phosphoserine, respectively. It also inhibits urokinase type plasminogen activator (uPA), an enzyme that plays a role in blood coagulation and fibrinolysis.
