It has been used as a chemical intermediate in the production of dyes and other chemicals. 4,4'-Dinitrobiphenyl is a colorless liquid with a faint smell and a neutral pH. It reacts with water to form sodium hydroxide, which can react with biphenyl to produce sodium sulfide and potassium dichromate.
