(R)-Ethyl 3-amino-2,5-dioxopyrrolidine-3-carboxylate is a chiral compound that has been used as an inhibitor of esterases, including carboxylesterases and lipases. It is also an effective hydrolytic biocatalyst for the conversion of prochiral substrates to chiral products. This drug has been shown to be active against E. coli and T. thuringiensis but not against prokaryotes such as B. subtilis or C. acetobutylicum. The enzyme activity of (R)-ethyl 3-amino-2,5-dioxopyrrolidine-3-carboxylate can be increased by coexpression with other enzymes in industrial microbial strains such as Saccharomyces cerevisiae or Escherichia coli.
