CAS:Febuxostat is a drug that belongs to the class of xanthine oxidase inhibitors. It is used for the treatment of chronic gout and hyperuricemia. Febuxostat inhibits xanthine oxidase, which decreases uric acid levels by inhibiting an enzyme that converts hypoxanthine to xanthine and subsequently increases uric acid production. This drug is marketed as a form of potassium febuxostat or sodium febuxostat in some countries. Febuxostat is often formulated with magnesium or hydroxylamine, both of which are necessary for its activity. The industrial preparation involves combining the ingredients in anhydrous dimethylformamide (DMF) with hexamethylenetetramine and sodium hydrogen chloride at a ratio of 2:2:1 respectively. These are then heated until magnesium sulfide precipitates out and is filtered off.
