    Androstenediol 3-acetate is an oxime that is used as a coupling agent in organic synthesis. It uncouples oxidative phosphorylation by forming a covalent bond to the enzyme cytochrome-c oxidase, which is involved in the electron transport chain of mitochondria. This inhibits ATP production and forces the cell to rely on anaerobic glycolysis for energy. The efficiency of this reaction was determined through nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and found to be about 60%. Androstenediol 3-acetate has been shown to increase myocardial contractility and cause cardiac hypertrophy in rats.
