Triflic acid is a strong acid that is commonly used as a catalyst in organic synthesis. It has been found to be effective in the hydrolysis of ester groups and the formation of carbon-carbon bonds. Triflic acid is often used in reactions involving amines, due to its nucleophilic properties. The mechanism behind this reaction may be due to the electron deficient nature of triflic acid, which allows it to act as an electrophile and react with nucleophiles such as amines. When combined with hexafluoroisopropanol (HFIP), triflic acid has shown to be optimal for coumarin derivatization, yielding high yields and purity.
