Biphenyltetramine can also be used in the synthesis of polybenzimidazole, which is a polymer that is insoluble in water and resistant to heat and light. This polymer has been used for applications such as photoresists, ion exchange membranes, and catalysts. The molecule also has coordination chemistry properties, where it binds to metals to form complexes. These complexes have been shown to be useful in adsorbing pollutants from wastewater or wastewater sludge. The molecule is synthesized by reacting salicylaldehyde with iron chloride followed by heating at 200°C for one hour in the presence of polybenzimidazole monomer.
