It is used in the synthesis of temsirolimus, an immunosuppressant drug that inhibits cell proliferation by suppressing the activity of mTOR. 2,2,5-Trimethyl-1,3-dioxane-5-carboxylic acid can be obtained from hydrogenation of 5-(trimethylammonio)pentanoic acid chloride. This reaction yield is high and the product can be purified by distillation or by crystallization from an alkaline solution. The carboxyl group reacts with inorganic acids such as hydrochloric acid or sodium carbonate to produce a carboxylate salt.
